During 2020, 182,451 tonnes of organic waste were collected in Madrid, more than 66,000 tonnes higher than the amount recovered in 2019, which indicates that more and more residents are getting it right every day to separate their organic waste.
With the introduction of the brown bin in the Centro district, in September 2021, now we can say that all districts of Madrid contribute to the separation of organic waste, and the waste collection figures reflect this collaboration.
According to data published on the Madrid City Council’s Transparency Portal, organic waste once again leads as the fraction destined for recycling that recovers the greatest amount of waste, compared to the tonnes collected in the containers for packaging (101,554), glass (90,107) and paper and cardboard (67,889).
Compared to the previous year, the total amount of waste collected decreased by 4.7%, and the level of tonnes of non-recyclable waste also decreased by almost 20%. These figures show that we are on the right track towards a cleaner and more sustainable city.
However, these results are not enough for the “Getting organic waste right” team. We aspire to achieve higher collection figures in the recycling bins, especially in the organic bin, because, if we take into account that almost half of the waste generated in the home is organic, we believe that achieving more tonnes in the brown bin is an achievable challenge. Will you join us in achieving it?
For our part, we promise to continue informing you about the benefits of recycling and to continue answering your questions about the separation of organic waste in Madrid.
Remember, making Madrid a more sustainable city is easy if we all participate!
