If you are someone who follows us regularly via social networks, you’ll know that we will soon finish our community activities for the “With ‘R’ for…” campaign.
Over the past two years of our campaign, our environmental educators have come into contact with every sector of the public, day after day, informing, raising awareness and answering all kinds of questions. During this time, we have carried out educational activities, information sessions, set up information booths, stands at events, paid visits to businesses, visits to street markets and provided information for pet owners and information at collection sites.
But we should not look back only at the last two years since, as you may recall, during the 2017-2021 period, we also launched the “Getting organic waste right” campaign. That campaign focused on the arrival in the city of Madrid of the new brown bin for organic waste, with activities similar to those carried out in “With ‘R’ for…”, in 4 phases, which covered the districts that were successively adopting the separation of organic waste.
So, in this article we would like to review the reasons why this type of campaign is so necessary and essential:
– They promote more sustainable and environmentally friendly habits, which are so necessary due to the climate crisis we are experiencing.
– They showcase environmental problems, enabling the public to become more environmentally aware.
– They put citizens at the heart of the process, to foster the idea of joint responsibility.
– They provide an educational tool for conveying information and resolving doubts.
– They make it possible to analyse and evaluate the positive impact of each action carried out during the campaigns.
In addition, our information and awareness campaigns on waste and cleanliness, in particular, have shown that:
– The public adopts more sustainable habits for reducing, reusing and recycling waste.
– Waste separation at source is improved by these campaigns, which makes for optimal subsequent waste treatment and recycling processes.
– Improved cleanliness data regarding pet excrement collection or use of waste paper baskets and bins.
In short, they allow the public, administrations, and collection and cleaning services to work hand in hand to achieve more sustainable cities and environments. These campaigns would not be possible without the effort of our environmental educators, who have carried out their professional work by performing all the activities described above.
